Heritage can describe the ethnic, cultural, or religious traditions that influence the values one holds as an adult. As a student of history, born in the South during the Jim Crow Era, I was drawn to the Civil War. As a boy I attended a Southern Baptist Church. I learned a lot about my ancestors who fought for the Confederacy and my father's timid yet courageous efforts to fight Jim Crow. I learned that the South is a different place and I struggled to feel that I belonged. What was it like to be a liberal southerner growing up during the Civil Rights Era? Let's explore this together.
